With reference to above subject, The most heavily loaded parts of railway vehicles are the axles in the wheel and axle sets. Their damage or breakdown would, in fact, entail considerable material losses and endanger human lives. Maintenance of railway vehicles is scheduled in accordance with periodic inspections and regular repairs as per Railway Board’s & RDSO instructions. Inspections and repairs are prescribed according to the criteria of operational life, limited by the time of operation of a locomotive in traffic or according to the criteria of operational life including the path travelled.
\r\nTwo most vulnerable locations in axles where defects are found,
1. Defects at the inner edge of the transition from wheel hub to axle.
2. Defects at the transition from gear wheel to axle.

The Institute of Rolling Stock Engineers is a Technical organizations for interactions and knowledge sharing of Rolling Stock Engineers. It is recognized by Railway Board, Ministry of Railways as a recognized institutions of which the serving railway engineers can become members and 90 % of the subscriptions is reimbursed by the Ministry.
